Two step authentication alternative to Google
#1
A while ago we talked about Google's two step authentication and how to restore your accounts on a new device.
The only way is to make sure you save the 15 digit (or so) string that comes with the QR code.
If you lose your phone and don't have the 15 digit code for all accounts you are in deep trouble.

For a while I have been trying about Authy (https://authy.com/) that allows for multiple devices and cloud storage of your keys. (they are encrypted so Authy can not use them) It seems to work fine on both PC and Android. They risk is you trust a third party if you decide to sync across devices. If you don't sync you could just as well use Googles app.

I find their service useful.

As much as I don't like the idea of Google owning my data, it came in handy when I lost my Android phone last year. New phone, login into Google accounts, restore and there it all is.

If Facebook offered a service like this, I would pass.

For some reason I am apprehensive about trying authy since I first heard of it, and don't know why.

Google can't help you restore your two-step authentications accounts except for their own as far as I know. EU will do something about our privacy. Read more about GDPR that all companies, unions etc have to implement https://www.eugdpr.org/. It's a small step in the right direction.

Twilio https://www.twilio.com/ that makes Authy  don't know your search history and other data except for your phone number of course. We know nothing is free so Authy is of course there to get users into their service for use of their other services.

Never ever use Facebook as signin for anything!!!

I am neutral about Twilio. I would rather trust them with minimal data, than Google with all my data.

I don't trust Facebook at all. Just looking at the targeting abilities for advertisers on Facebook makes the mind boggle.

The knowledge that they have on people and the analysis that they do probably takes up the bulk of their servers.

So why do we need to use a service like this?

A service like Authy makes you have it on multiple devices. You can have an extension to Chrome so when you need to login somewhere you don't need to pull out your phone.

There are many sources of information about security. On Udemy there is a ton of courses about "ethical hacking". It's just a way to be on the right side while showing how they do on the wrong side. Still it is useful, but time consuming to be updated all the time.
